Selling Your Home with Solar
What Homeowners Need to Know:
Thinking about moving? If you’ve gone solar with Northern PWR, you might be wondering what happens to your solar panels when it’s time to sell your home or relocate. The good news: solar is an asset that can work in your favor when selling, and we've got answers to the most common questions homeowners ask.
What Happens to My Solar Panels if I Sell My Home?
In most cases, homeowners leave the solar system in place and transfer ownership to the new buyer. This is a smart move! Solar panels can actually increase your home’s resale value. Studies show that solar-equipped homes sell faster and for more money than homes without solar.
Many buyers are drawn to the idea of lower utility bills, clean energy, and a system that’s already up and running. If your panels are fully owned (not leased), the process is typically straightforward: the solar system becomes part of the property, just like your roof or HVAC system.
If your system is financed, we recommend looping your lender into the conversation early so they can help outline transfer options and make sure there are no surprises during closing.
Can Northern PWR Move My Panels to a New Home?
We get this question a lot, and while it’s technically possible to remove and reinstall panels at a new home, Northern PWR does not currently offer panel relocation services.
Why? Because moving a solar system is more than just a lift-and-shift job. It requires new permits, design plans, engineering, and inspections to meet the codes and utility requirements of your new address. In most cases, it’s actually more cost-effective (and less stressful) to leave your current system in place and install a brand new system designed specifically for your new home’s layout, shading, and energy needs.
💡Pro Tips If You’re Planning to Sell
Highlight your solar system in your listing. Make sure your realtor knows the size of your system, how much it saves you monthly, and whether it’s owned or financed.
Provide documentation. Buyers love transparency. Include a copy of your solar contract, warranty, and recent power bills if you can.
Start the conversation early. If you're financing your system, talk to your lender and real estate agent as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transfer.
